Our History
At Smith Dukes, we trace our roots to the firm of Rosson & Smith in the early 1900’s. When Alabama passed its first Certified Public Accountancy (CPA) law in 1919, Mr. George T. Rosson was awarded Certificate No. 1 and Mr. Walter K. Smith was awarded Certificate No. 3.
Smith, Dukes & Buckalew, or Smith Dukes, was formed out of Rosson & Smith on October 31, 1933 by Alabama CPA professional pioneer Walter K. Smith and his partners Fred L. Smith, Gilbert F. Dukes and Vardaman M. Buckalew.
Today, we’ve grown to be one of the oldest and largest independently owned CPA firms in the Mobile Gulf Coast community. While we enjoy the benefits of our rich 80-year history in the community, we spend our time looking to the future rather than relying on the accomplishments of our past. Keeping current with both local and global trends affecting our clients and our people, we develop innovative, forward-thinking solutions to ensure the growth and prosperity of our clients, team members and community.
